just got an ounce in the mail
Actually, it’s just an unproofed copy from FSG of Denis Johnson’s “Train Dreams.” Not quite as good, but just as surprising as I didn’t realize he was working on anything at the moment. Thought he was too busy homeschooling his kids and writing plays for Campo Santo.
“Train Dreams” is something he published back in ’02 in the Paris Review. This version is reworked slightly, but since I never read it the first time, it doesn’t make much difference. The story — “Name of the World” short at 116 pages — is “the biography of a widower and hermit, Robert Grainier, who weeps in church, fears his dreams, and dies in 1968 without having used a telephone.” Ok, good enough for me. This one jumps to the top of my “To Read” list.
You can find the original PR version on the web if you look for it, but I’m not putting a link to it here as in all likelihood it’s been pirated.
