DOJ’s take on the Settlement
The U.S. Department of Justice has weighed in on the Google Book Settlement saying that currently, it violates the Sherman Act. This is probably the death nail for this sucker in its current form. Although both sides say they will continue negotiating, many are wondering who they are negotiating for, as many of the stakeholders/rightsholders aren’t even invited to the discussions.
This is a wait and see kind of thing. While on the surface, it’s great to have the government looking out for some of us. However, it’s yet to be seen, and possibly unlikely with the previous history of bullying here, that Google will seek help and approval from the stakeholders and rightsholders-the same folks they’ve already stolen from.
